The English Football Association today confirmed Sven-Goran Eriksson would definitely be in charge of the national team for next month's friendly against Spain.

The Swede confirmed his resignation as Lazio coach today, with FA spokesman Paul Newman admitting talks would start aimed at Eriksson taking over 'as soon as possible'.

February 1 has been mentioned as a possible starting date but the FA expect to have their man on board by the Spanish encounter at Villa Park on February 28 and the subsequent World Cup friendlies against Finland and Albania in March.

"Following the developments in Rome this morning, the FA can confirm that Sven-Goran Eriksson will take up his position as England head coach as soon as possible," said Newman.

"The uncertainty of the past few months is at an end and the FA are delighted that one of the most successful coaches in the world will shortly be joining us.

"Sven has told us that he is looking forward to working alongside the England coaching team of Tord Grip, Peter Taylor and Steve McClaren for the friendly against Spain and the World Cup qualifiers against Finland and Albania."
