Several American soldiers were reportedly wounded today when a rocket-propelled grenade was fired at their armoured car in Baghdad.

One witness near the Iraqi capital’s Mustansiryah University said four wounded US troops were carried out of the wreckage.

US helicopters could be seen hovering over the site after the attack.

A Mercedes travelling alongside the US vehicle was also hit, wounding the Iraqi civilian who was driving it, said witness Mohammed Abdullah.

US forces have come under fire almost daily in recent weeks in mainly Sunni Muslim central Iraq, a stronghold of former President Saddam Hussein.

At least 22 US and six British troops have been killed by hostile fire since major combat was declared officially over on May 1.
