Asia escapes ravages of Goner computer virus

Early indications show that the Goner virus has failed to make a big impact in Asia.

Early indications show that the Goner virus has failed to make a big impact in Asia.

The worm rapidly infected computers in the US and Europe overnight.

But it appears that the Asian businesses have had time to update their software protection.

Goner arrives as an email purporting to be a screen saver.

If opened the virus then passes the email on to everyone in the victim's address book.

It can also spread via the instant messaging program ICQ.

Another reason for its low impact in Asia could be that internet chat tools are less popular in Chinese speaking countries.

Experts are continuing to warn against complacency, pointing out that Goner can undermine antivirus software if activated.

"It's deleting antivirus and some firewall applications," says Ross Wilson, senior regional director of Symantec Southeast Asia. "We tend not to sensationalise, but it leaves the users open to other attacks if they're infected."
