Smith could be Doctor Who 'forever'

'Doctor Who' star Matt Smith says he could play the Time Lord "forever".

The 30-year-old star - who is rumoured to be hanging up his Sonic Screwdriver at Christmas - admits he would love to portray the time traveller in the BBC One sci-fi series for the rest of his career because he feels at home in the role.

When asked how long he can go on playing the Doctor, Matt - who has played the Time Lord since 2010 - said: "Forever! I came back and put the costume on for the photoshoot today. At risk of sounding self-indulgent and cheesy, it really does make you want to go back and start shooting.

"I'm attached to the show for the next year and I take it year by year. I think that's the only way you can take it."

Matt has plenty of time travelling to do as the Time Lord to keep him busy this year, but admits there is a danger of there being too much 'Doctor Who' on TV in the show's 50th anniversary year which could "compromise the quality" of the programme.

He added to Radio Times magazine: "I think there's only so much you can shoot. There's a Christmas special and eight episodes, there's the 50th anniversary, and on top of that you've got Mark Gatiss writing a script ['An Adventure in Space and Time'], plus you've got live events, things taking place around the world simultaneously.

"There's only so many you can make each year without compromising the quality. It will be everything that it needs to be, the anniversary. And in November there will be a right old party."
