To post or not to post? Our social media habits for Christmas revealed

It may be a day for spending with loved ones but 51% of us will be logging on to social media this December 25. That’s according to a new survey by Carphone Warehouse which examines the use of social media around the Christmas period.

A massive 82% of those planning to use social media on Christmas Day will spend up to 3 hours browsing their social media accounts. 39% admit to doing so to find out what other people are up to on the day while 1 in 5 say they find it such a long day; they like to log on to kill a few hours.

A CAREFULLY CURATED CHRISTMAS

When it comes to what we post on social media at Christmas, just over a quarter say they like to post ‘festive scenes’ such as Christmas lights and trees in the run up to the big day while one-fifth tend to post pictures of family and friends.

On December 25 itself, pictures and video of presents being opened are the number 1 post type of post. This is followed by family and friend photos (2), Christmas dinner pics (3), pictures of our pets (4) and selfies (5).

THE CHRISTMAS PARTY: TO POST OR NOT TO POST?

Two thirds of people polled will attend a work Christmas party this December and half (51%) intend to post pictures from the night to social media while 1 in 5 will post video.

Facebook is the most popular platform for posting party pics and video (46%) while 1 in 4 (26%) say they will be snapchatting parts of their work ‘do.

Just over 1 in 5 (22%) claim they have posted a drunk photo or video of a colleague to social media in the past and almost a third (32%) admit they didn’t ask permission before hitting the upload button. It comes as no surprise then that a quarter of those polled say they had been annoyed in the past by seeing a drunk photo or video of themselves the day after the night before.

#NOFILTER

Despite potentially risking the wrath of work colleagues, two thirds say they have no regrets about posting pictures or video from the work party. 12% even claim they would post a picture or a video of their boss drunk at the Christmas party.
