Trish, a tattoo artist at Lose This Skin started tattooing 23 years ago and says the most important change has been the advancement in tools and equipment, which has improved the quality of tattoos.
She also notes how the industry in Cork has changed over the years with more tattooists now coming from an art background.
And there's some useful advice for anyone considering going under the needle - for Dairin Barrett, it's important that it means something.
"I think once they have a meaning you're less likely to get sick of them.
"Someone gave me a piece of advice - carry the picture of the tattoo around with you for a couple of months before you get it and look at it as often as you can. And if you're still not sick at the end of that, then it's probably a good idea."
