Subway aiming to open 40 more Irish stores

The Subway sandwich company has announced plans for a further 40 stores in Ireland in 2014.

The company said it aims to create up to 400 new jobs and represent an investment of almost €5m.

The announcment came today as a new Subway store opened in Douglas, Cork, the company's 16th new store to open in the Republic of Ireland this year alone.

Subway currently operates 117 outlets countrywide.

“Ireland is a great success story for the Subway brand as evidenced by our strong growth over the past few years," said company spokesperson Neil Black.

"In the midst of the recession we have invested and grown our network and it is a great achievement to be opening the 1,700th store in the UK and Ireland in Douglas, Cork.”

Headquartered in Milford, Connecticut, the Subway brand was co-founded by Fred DeLuca and Dr. Peter Buck in 1965.
