Maynooth students develop app which rates business' wheelchair accessibility

Maynooth student Matthew McCann has developed a website and app service which tracks the accessibility of a place or business.

Online platform Access Earth invites users to access the website and add reviews of the accessibility of premises in their locality, allowing for others to plan journeys and vacations without having to worry about how accessible their destination will be.

Matthew, who relies on a walking aid, came up with the idea after some negative experiences whilst travelling, especially in regards to hotels not being easily accessible.

He realised that this is an issue that many people have to face, whether they have a disability or are even a parent with a buggy.

He combined his first-hand experiences with his tech skills to build a platform that aims to provide accessibility information.

"This is basic information that everyone should have access to," said Matt.

Since developing Access Earth, Matt has joined Maynooth University’s social entrepreneurship society Enactus.

Matt joined forces with the team of entrepreneurial students to further develop the platform.

They have created a five-year business plan for the venture, including a new revenue stream.

Access Earth is also planning to implement a booking system in the near future.
