Unions and management at Bausch and Lomb in Waterford have asked for the Labour Relations Commission to intervene in their dispute.
The company is seeking 200 redundancies out of a workforce of 1,100, as well as a 20% pay cut.
Both sides agreed to ask for help to co-chair talks between them with a view to reaching agreement on a plan to keep the contact lens plant open.
Director of conciliation at the LRC Kevin Foley and deputy director Anna Perry have accepted the invitation and will immediately involve themselves in the process.
In a statement this evening, the sides said there would be no public comment during the talks process.
