IBEC welcomes jump in students taking higher level maths

Business group IBEC has welcomed the jump in the number of people attempting the higher level maths exam.

More than 95% of them passed, meaning the number of people earning 25 bonus CAO points is also hitting a record high.

Points requirements for college courses with a maths link are expected to go up next week as a result, when the first round of offers is released.

Head of education policy with IBEC Tony Donoghue said the results showed the bonus point plan was a good idea.

He said: "It's important because we felt a lot of students were capable of doing the higher level paper but were opting for the lower level paper out of fear, mostly, and also due to the amount of extra work that was required."
