Hundreds of thousands of euro is expected to be spent during Black Friday sales today.
The event started off as an American tradition, falling on the Friday after Thanksgiving.
High street shops and online retailers try and tempt buyers with discounts and special deals.
Lynn Drumgoole, from Retail Excellence Ireland, has said while it is a good day for consumers it puts pressure on smaller retailers.
“There hasn’t been that footfall on a daily, weekly basis and now we’re being expected to give massive discounts at a time when customers are going out shopping anyway,” said Drumgoole.
“We can enjoy it today, but we need to be mindful of the fact that these discounts do cause some problems for retailers and particular some of the smaller ones as opposed to the bigger.”
