At least two people died and dozens more were feared injured in an explosion at a power plant today.
The blast happened at the plant in Middletown, Connecticut.
Betsy Hard, deputy commissioner of the state Department of Emergency Management and Homeland Security, said she did not know how many people were killed or how many were injured in the explosion.
But local reports said at least two people were dead.
Ms Hard said search and rescue teams were on their way to the plant and Middletown authorities have asked surrounding communities for help.
Al Santostefano, the deputy fire marshal in Middletown, said the explosion occurred at 11.17am (1617 GMT) at the Kleen Energy power plant. The blast destroyed parts of the building.
He said 50 workers were inside at the time.
The 620-megawatt plant was being built to produce energy primarily using natural gas.
The explosion shook houses at least 10 miles away.
