Trade talks protestors clash with police
Hundreds of protesters fought with riot police today in the most violent demonstrations since trade ministers from around the world began meeting in Hong Kong five days ago.
The running street battles involved European activists, South Korean farmers and south-east Asian groups who oppose the World Trade Organisation’s efforts to open up global markets.
The protestors hit police with bamboo sticks and used a metal barrier to ram a line of officers armed with riot shields. The police fought back with clubs, pepper spray and water cannons shooting water mixed with a chemical that burned the skin and eyes.
Secretary for Security Ambrose Lee went on television to warn the public to stay away from the protest area.
“The Hong Kong police will take robust actions” against the protesters, he said, without elaborating.
