An explosion at a maternity hospital in Romania’s capital killed three babies today, officials said.

Two pregnant women and eight newborn infants sustained burns and other injuries in the blast in Bucharest.

Health ministry official Raed Arafat says those injured in the blast at the Giulesti maternity hospital are being treated at other hospitals in the capital.

Emergency situations spokeswoman Anca Onofrei said the explosion occurred on the second floor of the hospital, and thick smoke spread into the intensive care unit where premature babies were being treated.

It was not immediately clear what caused the blast.
