The Foreign Minister in Afghanistan’s ruling Taliban regime has reportedly asked the United States to slow down its bombing campaign in the country so that moderate Taliban can reconsider their refusal to extradite Saudi dissident Osama bin Laden.

According to Western sources, Mullah Abdul Wakil Muttawakil asked Pakistan to convey the message. US Secretary of State Colin Powell met with President Pervez Musharraf yesterday but it is unclear if the issue was raised.

Since becoming Foreign Minister more than a year ago, Muttawakil, whose views are seen as moderate, has had public disagreements with hardline Taliban.
