Families have agreed to call off the search for nine people still missing after a US nuclear submarine collided with a Japanese fishing vessel.

USS Greeneville hit the Ehime Maru off the Hawaiian island of Oahu in February. Of the 35 people on board, nine disappeared, including four students. The training craft belonged to the Uwajima Fisheries High School.

Relatives agreed to the search being called off during a meeting with Ehime Prefecture Governor Moriyuki Kato on Saturday.

He also told them the United States wants to send officials to explain compensation. The prefectural government will advise the navy to organise a briefing with the families and survivors soon.

Mr Kato said: "I felt the acceptance of the briefing and the termination of the search indicated the families and victims have come to terms with the incident."
