Fuel prices are set to soar in the US after a fire ripped through one of its largest oil refineries.

Thousands of residents of Richmond, San Francisco were ordered to stay indoors after a column of black smoke spewed into the sky.

It's not yet known what caused the fire that left 200 people in hospital and forced four train stations to abandon services.

The plant produces over 245,000 barrels of oil per day which is around an eighth of California's total refinery capacity.
