Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has selected Paul Ryan, a US congressman from Wisconsin, as his vice presidential running mate.

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has selected Paul Ryan, a US congressman from Wisconsin, as his vice presidential running mate.

The candidate made his announcement to supporters via a phone app, saying: “Mitt’s Choice for VP is Paul Ryan.”

The pair were set to appear together at 9amlocal time (2pm Irish time) in Norfolk, Virginia.

Mr Romney and Mr Ryan are kicking off a four-day bus tour that will take them to as many states.

At 42, Mr Ryan is a generation younger than the 65-year-old Mr Romney.
