Riot police release teargas at Athens protest

Riot police have released several rounds of tear gas at protesters outside the Greek parliament.

Greek MP's will vote tonight on legislation in parliament designed to keep them in the euro and secure critical funding to save it from bankruptcy.

Over one thousand protesters have gathered in Syntagma Square, urging politicians to vote no.

"The tear gas is still being fired by riot police. It happened all of a sudden, around 50 or 60 rounds have been emitted so far," said Shona Murray reporting from Athens.

"There's a thick fog of teargas right in front of the parliament. There are plenty of people who came well prepared who have gas masks on. And there's now a fire being lit in Syntagma Square," she said.

"There are riot police everywhere and looks like it's going to get a bit nasty."
