Police attacked in new flag protest

Loyalists attacked police in east Belfast tonight in a new outbreak of street disorder linked to protests against the decision to restrict the flying of the Union Flag above the City Hall.

Officers were pelted with missiles in the Albertbridge Road area where they faced a small crowd of troublemakers, some masked and others carrying red, white and blue flags.

At one stage, a street was blocked by a burning barricade and traffic had to be diverted.

There were no immediate reports of any injuries.
