The death toll from heavy rains and thunderstorms that lashed Pakistan’s southern port city of Karachi has increased to 43, an official said today.

Several homes collapsed in the rains in various parts of Karachi yesterday, killing 18 people who were trapped or struck by debris, said Karachi Mayor Mustafa Kamal.

At least 20 people were reported killed in separate incidents of electrocution.

Kamal said the death toll rose after 23 more casualties were reported, including the 18 who died when their mud-built homes were destroyed on the outskirts of the city.

Some 200 people were injured in rain and storm-related incidents, he said.
