Obama meets envoys about shutting Guantanamo
President Barack Obama has met two special envoys for closing Guantanamo Bay and recommitted to shutting down the Cuba jail.
Mr Obama met US State Department’s Clifford Sloan and the Pentagon’s Paul Lewis, in the first meeting between him and the envoys, the White House said.
The president vowed to close the prison on the US military base which houses terror suspects, but has been thwarted by congress. He announced in May that he would appoint envoys and ordered the Pentagon to designate a site in the US where detainee trials could be held.
The White House says the administration will keep transferring detainees who are cleared to go to other countries. Mr Obama wants congress to remove restrictions on transfers.
There are 164 prisoners at Guantanamo. A formal review process for dozens held without charges is under way.
