Obama delays general's NATO nomination

President Barack Obama has delayed General John Allen's nomination as NATO's supreme commander pending an investigation into his email correspondence with a woman at the center of a sex scandal.

FBI investigators are investigating between 20,000 and 30,000 emails between Allen and Jill Kelley.

Ms Kelley exposed the affair between former CIA director David Patreus and his biographer, Paula Broadwell after receiving threatening mail.

Allen, the top US commander in Afghanistan, had been tapped to take over as the Supreme Allied Commander Europe before the latest cascade of revelations.
