North Korea says US must drop demand for scrapping nuclear programmes before talks

North Korea has said it is will only have talks with the US if Washington drops preconditions and demands for showing a willingness to scrap its nuclear programmes.

A North Korean delegate to the Olympics in South Korea said his country is willing to hold talks with US president Donald Trump but only "under the right conditions", said the office of South Korean president Moon Jae-in during the closing ceremony.

The spokesperson for North Korea's foreign ministry said the North would not accept preconditions for talks.

The Trump administration has said North Korea must show a real commitment towards ending its nuclear and missile programmes before any talks can take place.
