Iceland has abandoned its application to join the European Union.

Iceland has abandoned its application to join the European Union.

Its foreign ministry says it's disbanding its EU membership committee.

The government says elections held earlier this year, where Eurosceptic parties were elected to power, indicate the public no longer wants to join the EU.

The country's been involved in lengthy disputes with the EU over the right to fish for mackerel in waters around the Faroe Islands.
