Gujarat has run out of firewood to cremate thousands of victims of the Indian earthquake.

Reports say people have been using tyres, cloth and other materials to burn the bodies.

A relief group is bringing in firewood from a nearby state and the air force and navy are on standby to fetch supplies from other areas.

Many bodies are being given mass cremations.

Agriculture Secretary Bhashkar Baruah said: "Three days after the quake, hopes of finding more survivors are diminishing.

"More and more bodies are being unearthed but there is an acute shortage of firewood to cremate those who have been killed.

"We cannot let bodies remain in the open due to the fear of an epidemic".
