A woman and four children are dead after a blaze at a house in Oklahoma City.

City Fire Department Major Tammy McKinney said the children killed in the fire range in age from two to eight years old. A man is in critical condition at a local hospital.

Major McKinney said the house was already engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived just minutes after receiving a call around 6.30am. The cause of the blaze was not immediately known. Major McKinney said the home did not have working smoke detectors.

The inside of the home about a mile east of Lake Hefner in north-west Oklahoma City was completely gutted by the fire.
