Eight-organ transplant toddler dies

An 18-month-old girl who underwent an eight-organ transplant last year has died in an Italian hospital.

Alessia Di Matteo’s condition was already extremely serious when she was transferred to a hospital in her home town of Genoa from a Florida clinic last month.

The toddler was born with congenital smooth muscle disorder, which prevented normal function of her stomach, intestines and kidneys. The condition is fatal if left untreated.

In January last year, she underwent a 12-hour operation at the Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami – a leading centre for multi-visceral operations. Aged six months at the time, she received a new liver, stomach, pancreas, small intestine, large intestine, spleen and two kidneys.

Di Matteo later received a ninth transplant, which was to replace the transplanted liver.
