Hundreds of Italian police were arresting dozens of people around Naples today as part of a fight against a bloody mob turf war which has terrified the southern Italian city, police said.
The operation, ordered by the Naples prosecutor, was targeting the Camorra organised crime syndicate, according to remarks by Gen. Vincenzo Giuliani, of the city’s Carabinieri paramilitary police, shown on Italian TV. He gave no other details.
The ANSA news agency said 52 people were arrested in raids that started before dawn today and focused on Secondigliano and Scampia, two poor neighbourhoods on the city’s outskirts.
Among those apprehended was Ciro Di Lauro, the son of an alleged mobster boss whose clan is believed to be at the centre of the violence.
At least 20 people have been killed in Naples in the past month, prompting authorities to launch a security clampdown.
Investigators say the violence stems from a power struggle within the Di Lauro clan, a Camorra subgroup, over drug trafficking.
