Defence sums up at Breivik trial

The defence has started its closing arguments in the 10-week trial of confessed Norwegian mass killer Anders Breivik.

The defence has started its closing arguments in the 10-week trial of confessed Norwegian mass killer Anders Breivik.

Defence lawyer Geir Lippestad told Oslo district court that his client admits that he carried out the bombing and shooting attacks that killed 77 people the way they have been presented in court.

He said the fact that “little, safe Norway would be hit by such a terror attack is almost impossible to understand”.

Mr Lippestad said that may explain why psychiatric experts reached different conclusions about Breivik’s mental state.

The defence lawyer is expected to use the closing arguments at the court to rebut the prosecution’s assertion that the self-described anti-Muslim militant should be declared insane and sent to a mental institution.
