Britons face death by firing squad if found guilty of Bali trafficking charges
Two Britons have gone on trial for allegedly trafficking cocaine onto Indonesia’s holiday island of Bali.
Both could face death by firing squad if found guilty.
Lindsay Sandiford, 56, was arrested in May when customs officers at Bali’s airport discovered 3.8 kilos (8.4lbs) of cocaine worth $2.5m stuffed into her luggage.
Her alleged accomplice, Julian Anthony Ponder, 47, went on trial separately at the same court today.
Sandiford, originally from Redcar, Teesside, who was not accompanied by a lawyer, told the court she would challenge the prosecution indictment, arguing it was not accurate.
Indonesia has very strict drug laws. More than 140 people are on death row for drug crimes, a third of them foreigners.
