A US man claims he was attacked by a "bunch of leprechauns".

The man - whose identity has not been released - was left bruised and bloodied after a weekend altercation in the Belltown area of Seattle, and he alleges the mythological creatures were the aggressors.

Police spotted a number of people fleeing the scene when they arrived before seeing the man on the floor holding his head.

When they asked him who was responsible for the attack, he replied: "It was a bunch of leprechauns,” and he explained they had become jealous of him for dancing with a girl.

Unfortunately for the man, police were unable to find any leprechauns or anyone else involved in the altercation.
