Bernie Sanders announces 2020 presidential bid

Senator Bernie Sanders has announced he will run for president in 2020.

He confirmed to a Vermont radio station today that he would be making a second bid for the White House.

"We began the political revolution in the 2016 campaign, and now it's time to move that revolution forward," he told Vermont Public Radio.

The 77-year-old sent an email to supporters this morning saying that his 2016 campaign "began the political revolution" and that it was now to time to "implement the vision we fought for".

"Our campaign is not only about defeating Donald Trump," he wrote.

"Our campaign is about transforming our country and creating a government based on the principles of economic, social, racial and environmental justice."

Sanders amassed 13 million votes in the 2016 primaries but ultimately lost out on the Democratic nomination to Hillary Clinton.

According to Time magazine, more than 450 people have already registered with the US Federal Election Commission to run for president in 2020.
