Barroso: Leaders will stand by Euro

The European Union has been officially awarded the 2012 Nobel Peace Prize at a ceremony in Oslo.

Chairman of the Nobel Committee Thorbjorn Jagland said the prize recognised that Europe had turned from a continent of war to a continent of peace.

Taoiseach Enda Kenny joined EU leaders in Oslo to attend the ceremony, but the prize was collected by three representatives of the EU, Jose Manuel Barroso, Hermann Van Rompuy and Martin Shultz.

President Barroso said EU leaders would stand by the Euro, and he pledged continuing efforts to maintain peace.

"My message is that you can count on our creative efforts to fight for lasting peace, freedom and justice.

"Over the past 60 years, the European Union has shown it is possible for people and nations to come together across borders."
