The United Nations Secretary General, Ban Ki-Moon, has called on the Indian government to take immediate action to protect women.

The United Nations Secretary General, Ban Ki-Moon, has called on the Indian government to take immediate action to protect women.

It comes after the a 23-year-old Delhi student, who was brutally gang raped in the city, died yesterday.

The medical student had suffered brain injuries and massive internal injuries in the attack and died in hospital in Singapore where she had been taken for treatment.

Her funeral took place today.

Meanwhile, scuffles broke out in central Delhi earlier between police and protesters who say the government is doing too little to protect women.

Thousands of people have taken to the streets calling for change since this crime came to light two weeks ago.
