Australia passes carbon laws
Australia's parliament has passed controversial carbon laws after five years of heated debate.
The country's top 500 polluting companies will be forced to pay a tax on carbon emissions from
July next year.
It is a major victory for embattled Prime Minister Julia Gillard, whose popularity has plunged over the scheme.
