An air force plane crashed into houses near a base in northern India today, killing at least three people and injuring 12 others on the ground.

The British built Jaguar fighter jet crashed near the air force base in Ambala, 125 miles north-west of the Indian capital, New Delhi.

Police in Ambala said at least three people – including a woman and a child - were killed and 12 others were injured, as the aircraft crashed on the outskirts of the city. The pilot ejected safely.

Two houses caught fire and the casualties could increase as more people were feared trapped under the wreckage, said police officer Rajpal Singh.

Police said the aircraft caught fire minutes after taking off on a routine exercise.
