Desperate times can bring desperate measures and even the brightest, bubbling optimist could dent that these as desperate times. That, however, does no make desperate measures any more palatable or acceptable.
Employment law expert Richard Grogan has warned that women will bear the brunt of the pandemic's collateral damage. He warns that women, especially those on maternity leave, are being abandoned by employers and government. His practice has seen a huge increase in the number of calls from women on maternity leave who are not given the opportunity to resume work under the same terms as before.
These difficulties are unfolding at a moment of record unemployment so understanding is necessary. That understanding does not however stretch to allowing employers who can afford to meet their social obligations using the pandemic as a chance to cut their payroll costs.
