Regarding the conference held last week (in which UKIP’s Nigel Farage was the keynote speaker), to promote ‘Irexit’ — an opportunity for Irish voters to give their opinion about whether Ireland should stay in the EU.

One aspect about an EU-sponsored poll held nine months ago (that 16% of those polled want Ireland to leave the EU along with the UK) made me wonder about representation of this minority group in the Oireachtas.

It seems not even one of the present cohort of TD agrees with the 16% — as all the major and minor parties and also the Independent TDs seem to be complete out-and-out Europhiles.

Surely it is time for some worthy person to form a “non-EU” political party, to contest the next general election and hopefully get elected and represent those of us who doubt the benefits of Ireland staying in the EU?

There are plenty of leaders who could take-up such a mantle, including John Waters, Herman Kelly and Ray Bassett.

I for one would be willing to join such a progressive party. I will even suggest a name for such an entity. How about “Ireland First”?
