Readers blog: Repeal side quick to call for sanctions now they are gamekeeper

In the run up to last year’s May referendum, we were continually reminded of the chilling effect of the Eighth Amendment and its associated maximum penalties, on both women and on members of the medical profession.

This was in spite of the fact that nobody in violation of the law had been subjected to the penalties in question.

Now, in a changed situation, it looks like the cold chill of repeal will be felt most acutely by those who continue to support the right to life, with Ailbhe Smith of the Coalition for Repeal and others, calling on a similarly minded health minister to implement sanctions against those who would picket the premises of abortion providers.

It may be only a week since the new legislation took effect, but already the former poachers and their apologists are proving themselves very adept at adjusting to the new role of gamekeeper.
