Readers blog: People with addictions to prescription drugs need help urgently

To whoever will listen …

In recent days my partner walked into court and asked the judge for jail.

A desperate decision we both agreed on to save his life.

He did not deserve jail nor did he want it, but we were at a loss on how to handle his serious addiction to prescription drugs in this country of Ireland.

Addiction is a huge reason our young people are deciding to commit suicide.

The government should know this and help us dealing with this addiction. There is no help! We have tried everything and everywhere for urgent help and backs were turned on us with cold hearts!

Someone has got to start helping us! So many of us have been sent away in suicide mind-sets and with a total sense of despair!

My partner's addiction all began with a few prescribed tablets for pain and has led to the horrendous addiction that leaves him so desperate he wants to die rather than keep feeling what hes feeling.

He does not want to die! He just wants help! But I'm watching him struggle , helping him beg and still nothing!

I'm not sure were to go or who to turn to next.

There needs to be more beds more facilities to help us to help our families.

Policies that mean you are not welcome if you’ve not completed a rehab programme or have walked out before, need to be removed.

As many of us know well it can take many times for an addict to get the strength to stick it out an is just cruelty to be refused and to know there is no other option other then jail.

I don’t think anybody knows who the real person behind my partner is … He is not what his addiction makes him do.

He is so much better than the addiction. He just hasn’t a chance.

There is no help for him.

For the record the Judge sentenced him to three months. I slept right for the first time ... knowing he was behind bars safe and ALIVE.

For now that’s enough, enough for him to withdraw and be kept safe until he's clean. For me to have a break from the stress and worry that any day he could over dose again.

I know many will say you need to help yourself but I know some things are to big to deal with alone and it could be a whole lot easier to be met with some kind words ...

This cannot be taken lightly anymore. This is literally life and death and it seems this country must want us dead!
