Readers Blog: Men brought in the Eighth and must now repeal it

Men of Ireland: Is your mother equal to a fertilised ovum, a zygote, a blastocyst, a brainless embryo, or a non-viable foetus? If your sister was about to take an abortion pill, would you stop her? Would you want her to be convicted for it? Would you stop your daughter from travelling to England for an abortion? Would you vote to take away her freedom to travel? Is there a difference between an Irish abortion in Ireland and an Irish abortion in England? If your friend told you she had an abortion, would you judge her?

If you answer ‘no’ to these questions, you are pro-choice. Vote ‘yes’ in the upcoming referendum to repeal the Eighth Amendment.

The Eighth Amendment is not just a ban on abortion; it removes consent in wanted pregnancies. Geraldine Williams, at forty weeks of pregnancy, was taken to court for refusing a caesarean section. Imagine that was your wife. Imagine being told ‘we are taking your wife to court, because we want to physically restrain her and cut her open without her consent’. What would you do if the HSE said that to you? Would you let that happen? Until the Eighth Amendment is repealed, they can try to do that again.

If you’re thinking ‘it’s a women’s issue, I shouldn’t have a say’, you’re right. It is the pregnant woman’s issue. Only she can make the decision that is best for her and her family. You have to vote ‘yes’ to put the decision in her hands. Men put the Eighth Amendment in the Constitution; it is their responsibility to take it out.

Lads, please repeal the Eighth. Or the feminists will never shut up.
