I am writing to express my concern over the very dangerous loss of basic services in the Rosslare/Broadway areas.
While I acknowledge that this was due to an unprecedented storm event, the loss of basic services in these areas is not a new phenomenon.
This may well be due to failure to update, maintain and monitor the conditions which may lead to disruption.
The elderly residents in these areas, many of whom live alone, were without electricity, water, and even home phones, resulting in complete isolation from neighbours and emergency assistance at the hight of the storm.
Our politicians are extremely vocal in their desire or assumption that “we are the best little country in the world” or “we will have a world class service”.
This is the language of insecurity and immaturity in a country due to celebrate 100 years of independence.
I urge our politicians to concentrate on getting the basic infrastructure right, in order to build on firm foundations before striving for these lofty ambitions.
