Letter to the Editor: Dr Holohan needs to up his game

I no longer have confidence in Tony Holohan, the chief medical officer.

My children have immune deficiency to begin with. I took them out of school some time ago. This virus could kill them. Dr Holohan is doing his best but he is making mistakes.

The Italian rugby fans’ flights should have been cancelled. Flights for Cheltenham should have been cancelled. Racing fans should have been advised not to travel. The 3Arena should be closed. It took Dr Holohan far too long to cancel St Patrick’s Day. The schools should be closed immediately.

In my opinion, the public health experts advising the Government are moving far too slowly. Medical consultants specialising in infectious diseases working at the coalface should now be calling the shots. It is the obvious thing to do

The spectacle of large crowds hugging and celebrating at Cheltenham was the final straw. If Covid-19 affected horses, Cheltenham would have been cancelled. We did not even discourage people from travelling. It is nowhere near good enough. This is far too serious — a once-in-a-century event being dealt with by a “next press conference” mindset.

Dr Holohan has a very difficult job. He needs to up his game. History will judge the past three weeks very harshly.
