Considering the efforts being made by the vast majority of Irish residents to keep themselves and others out of harm’s way during this time if crisis, it is extraordinary to note that there are still those who care neither for their own safety nor the safety of others and continue to indulge in criminally irresponsible behaviour.

New figures from the Road Safety Authority reveal that 16 pedestrians have been killed on Irish roads so far this year, compared to half that figure for the whole of 2019. This is despite the fact that the amount of traffic has reduced dramatically since the start of the lockdown over a month ago.

In fact, six pedestrians have been killed on Irish roads since the schools were closed in the middle of March. The RSA also reveals an increase in the number of drink and drug drivers and also of those driving at very high speeds.

A total of 54 people have died on the roads so far in 2020, seven more than last year. That is a grim statistic and behind that statistic lies horror and heartache being endured by the families of loved ones who have been killed on the roads.
