Ashley Young, already on a yellow card for a foul on Kylian Mbappe, sent former Man United man Angel Di Maria crashing into the stands with a hefty shoulder.

Liam Brady, speaking on RTÉ, said he was lucky not to see red and Young "got away with it."

Brady felt that "another referee might have said that was needless. Stupid. Here's a yellow card and he could have his team down to 10 men.

"When you're on a booking, you don't do something rash like that. So he got away with it."

Didi Hamann said Young should have seen red and that the ball was going out of play.

"I think he's more than lucky to stay on the pitch," Hamann said. "It's just stupid. It's a stupid challenge. There's no need for it. [The] ball was going out."

While the RTÉ pair felt Young should have gone, former Champions League final ref Mark Clattenburg said the challenge should not have earned Young a second yellow.

Writing in the Daily Mail, Clattenburg said: "The slope at the side of the Old Trafford pitch made it look far worse than it was.

"Had this match been played on a pitch surrounded by an athletics track, for example, the coming together between Young and Di Maria would have looked like an innocuous shoulder-to-shoulder challenge."

He added that "the referee got this call right".
