Robson gets the all-clear

Bobby Robson has been given the medical all-clear to resume his role with the Republic of Ireland.

International football consultant Robson today spoke with Football Association of Ireland chief executive John Delaney to discuss his future.

Robson has missed Ireland’s last four matches – against Holland, Germany, Cyprus and the Czech Republic – following two operations to remove cancerous growths.

The latter was a small brain tumour which resulted in the 73-year-old suffering minor complications, and there were fears he would have to quit his job just nine months after his appointment along with manager Steve Staunton.

But the former England manager will now see out his two-year deal, starting with next month’s Euro 2008 qualifier with San Marino at Lansdowne Road.

Robson said: “I have been given the all-clear by the doctors and I am looking forward to getting back to doing the job I was employed to do.

“Although I have been in regular contact with Stephen and John by telephone, I missed being able to link up with the squad and attend the games.

“But the FAI, and in particular John and Stephen, have been wonderfully supportive in recent weeks.

“I desperately want to repay them in the coming months by helping Stephen and the squad build on the excellent performance against the Czech Republic and show the result against Cyprus was a one-off.”

Ireland were held to a 1-1 draw by the Czechs in Dublin last Wednesday as they produced a rousing performance to finally kickstart their Euro 2008 campaign just days after a 5-2 defeat to the Cypriots.

That resulted in Staunton’s job coming under threat, but he and Robson will be in tandem again come the middle of November.

Staunton said: “Although I have spoken daily to Bobby, it is a great boost to know he has now been cleared to travel and attend matches.

“It will be great to have him around again, and myself and the players look forward to linking up with him for next month’s B international against Scotland and the game with San Marino.”

Delaney, who met with Robson at his home in England, added: “I’m delighted Bobby is now fit to resume his duties.

“In the short period before his illness he showed us a glimpse of how much he can contribute and we look forward to benefiting from his vast experience in the months ahead.”
