Liverpool midfielder John Arne Riise will be called up for national service in the Norwegian Army early in the new year, according to reports.
Norway international Riise is due to turn up for duty on 8 January after a letter written by his mother asking for his call-up to be postponed failed to reach the authorities in time.
National service is still compulsory in Norway and Riise's mother Berit told the Sun: "One year away from Liverpool could destroy his next 10 years."
However, Riise still hopes to gain a deferment even though his application for a delay did not arrive with the Norwegian military by the 25 November deadline.
Norwegian Colonel Hans Pinslund told the Sun: "If he has got a very good reason it's possible he could defer it."
