New Cork City boss jets in to meet players
New Cork City boss Tommy Dunne jets in from Helsinki today to begin the resurrection of the Leesiders and start work under his one-year deal.
The Dubliner, who was assistant to Paul Doolin, steps into management for the second time having managed Finnish second division club, TP Seinajoki for two years before he moved back to Ireland.
The former Bohemians, Shels and UCD full-back said that any one of six clubs could win the first division title but whether Cork emerge as one of those clubs remains to be seen.
“It was a bit of a surprise for me to get the job and I didn’t expect it. I thought they might go for a local man with the tight budget,” said Dunne .
“This is a new chapter in the club’s history and we have turned over a new leaf. It was disappointing the way it all ended last week but the club owed so much money, there was no rescue package.
“Hopefully things will settle down now and we can get to work right away. We don’t have a great time frame with Derry away on this night week and Waterford at home the following weekend and they are two of the fancied teams,” said Dunne who hopes to complete his UEFA Pro licence in June.
Dunne, a cousin of Aston Villa’s Richard Dunne, also acted as assistant to Doolin at Drogheda United and was manager of the UCD U-21s for a season.
“This is a tough division to get out of and any one of five or six clubs could do it. You have Derry, Shelbourne, Waterford, Finn Harps, Monaghan and hopefully ourselves.”
Cork City FORAS Co-op have also confirmed admission prices at Turner’s Cross for the new season as €10 for adults and €5 for U18s/OAPs.
Season tickets will go on sale in the coming days at €139 for adults and €69 for U18s/OAPs.
