West Ham boss Avram Grant could be about to step in and hijack Wigan’s plans to sign Sekou Baradji.
The 26-year-old midfielder has been on trial with the Latics for three weeks and was part of their squad for the recent tour of Austria.
Manager Roberto Martinez is believed to have been impressed with Baradji but has yet to make the Paris-born player a formal offer.
That has alerted Grant, who tried to sign Baradji last season when he was at Portsmouth.
Baradji has been signed by West Ham once before, in 2005, but did not make an appearance for the Londoners as he immediately left for Reading on loan and was then released by the Hammers when the loan deal came to an unsuccessful end.
Grant is still keen on bringing in new faces to Upton Park and is not thought to have been put off by Baradji’s history.
Whether that now triggers Martinez into action remains to be seen, although if he did miss out on the player it would not go down well with the Wigan support, who have expressed their keenness to sign a player who also holds Senegalese citizenship.
